AMD Ryzen Desktop PC Processors

AMD Ryzen Processors - PC Gaming - Gadget Boulevard

It took AMD a while to crawl back to life after a disappointing era of the Bulldozer architecture. But AMD has come back and with a bang thanks to the Zen architecture and with the Ryzen processors.

With the new architecture and vastly improved instructions per cycle performance, AMD once again is here to shake things up with Intel.

Core count and clock speeds has been steadily rising, thanks in part to the shift to 14nm manufacturing process. Giving the new Zen architecture energy efficiency and higher instructions per cycle.

Let’s take a look at the current lineup of AMD desktop processors based on the new Zen architecture.

Table of contents

Newer processors will be at the top while the older generation will be at the bottom.

Zen 2 Architecture and the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Processors

The announcement of the Zen 2 architecture and the Ryzen 3000 series processors was once of the most anticipated of all at the CES 2019. And AMD delivered it with a first-look of the performance of a pre-production Ryzen 3000 processor using the Radeon VII.

At the Computex keynote of AMD’s Dr. Lisa Su AMD touted that the new “Zen 2” architecture has achieved a 15% boost in instructions per clock (IPC) performance as compared to the previous “Zen” architecture.

While IPC performance are boosted, cache sizes are significantly increased across all new processors.

Aside from all of these enhancements and improvements, the AM4 platform will now have a processor having more than 8 cores.

Enter the Ryzen 9 3900X, the first 12 core/ 24 thread processor on the AM4 socket for mainstream and even budget gamers.

And guess what, the Ryzen 9 3900X wouldn’t cost you a a liver or two as its MSRP is just $499 (USD).

Here’s a quick look of the new Ryzen 3000 series processors:

Zen+ Architecture and the 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen Processors

The Zen+ architecture is a refinement of the original Zen architecture. Launched April 2018, the Zen+ introduced further enhancements to the architecture in pursuit of performance and energy efficiency.

The new Zen+ processors are manufactured using 12nm fabrication process. This shift to 12nm allowed AMD to further achieve higher clock speeds and lower power consumption as compared to the 1st generation Zen processors.

Notable design changes to the architecture helped improved clock speed regulation, reduced cache & memory latencies, increased cache bandwidth, and better DDR4 memory support.

Zen+ also introduced two new technology improvements, the Precision Boost 2 and XFR2.

As with the previous generation, the sweet spot for the Zen+ Ryzen are the Ryzen 5 2600, Ryzen 7 2700, and their unlocked versions.

Zen Architecture and the 1st Gen AMD Ryzen Processors

The Zen architecture’s main focus was to increase the per-core performance and AMD succeeded with the the Ryzen processors.

The 1st Generation Ryzen processors was announced December 2016, and subsequently was made available on March 2017.

The new Zen based Ryzen processors uses the new AM4 socket using the 300 series chipset.

Along with performance improvements the Zen architecture introduced the SMT (simultaneous multithreading), that allows for each core to process two threads simultaneously.

Previous Bulldozer architecture used the CMT (clustered multi-thread) design.

All AMD Ryzen processors, except for the Ryzen 3 models, comes with SMT enabled.

Another feature brought by Zen is XFR (eXtended Frequency Range), this is an automated overclocking feature that allows boost speed beyond the advertised turbo frequency.

The L3 cache was also improved and now starts at 8MB for the Ryzen 3 to as much as 16MB for the Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 models.

The sweet spot for the 1st Gen Ryzen processors are the Ryzen 5 1600 and the Ryzen 7 1700. Both processors also have unlocked versions.

PC gaming with AMD processors are once again very good.
