AMD Radeon 7 Graphics Card – Will you buy it?

AMD Radeon 7 Graphics Card - Gadget Boulevard

It has been more than a month after the AMD Radeon 7 graphics card was released and it seemed that there is really a supply problem.

Though AMD did mentioned that they will be able to meet gamers demand but reality is a bit the opposite.

Checking through Newegg and Amazon and you’ll see what I mean.

At Newegg only the PowerColor Radeon VII is listed but is currently out of stock.

Going over to Amazon there are a bunch of Radeon 7 listed but most are sold by other retailers.

And when it is sold by other retailers the price differs by as much as $200!!

Amazon does have a PowerColor Radeon VII that is ship & sold by Amazon and priced at $699.99.

So can you buy a Radeon 7 graphics card? The answer is a “YES“.

But the bigger question is will you buy it?

Let’s compare the Radeon 7 with its older brother, the Vega 64.

AMD Radeon 7 versus Vega 64

As far as architecture is concerned both the Radeon 7 and Radeon Vega 64 are nearly similar. As the Radeon 7 is technically a Vega in 7nm manufacturing processing.

There are substantial improvements though aside from being manufactured in a 7nm process. These improvements gave way for improved performance in processing power and as well as larger bus-width.

Memory bandwidth was increased by as much as 200% while keeping overall power consumption to 300W.

As far as AMD is concerned there will be no custom Radeon 7. All manufacturers will use the same design and that includes the three-fan cooling solution.

So which brand to choose? You can choose from any manufacturer.

The question would be which one is available right now at the launch price of $699?

Alternatives to the AMD Radeon 7

There are a lot of alternatives at the price range of $700 – $800 that the AMD Radeon 7 stepped into. And one of these alternatives is the Radeon Vega 64 itself.

As prices for the Vega 64 and Vega 56 were adjusted when the Radeon 7 entered the market, these two graphics cards seems to be worth their price.

Though the Vega 64 still have power consumption issues its price is now back at launch price of $499. We recommend the MSI Radeon Vega 64 Air Boost which is priced at $495.80.

Vega 56 prices though are still a tad more but if you want one then the MSI Radeon Vega 56 Air Boost would be a great choice at $437.66.

So it’s an interesting choice if you want to go full AMD.

Another alternative is the Ray Tracing capable GeForce RTX 2070. When the Radeon 7 arrived, Nvidia adjusted their prices that you can buy an RTX 2070 under $500. Like the EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 Black Gaming which is priced at $489.99.

If you don’t mind the price of $700 then the GIGABYTE RTX 2080 WINDFORCE graphics card at just $729.99 is a solid choice.
